As part of a collaborative makers event hosted by Austin Women in Architecture (WiA) and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance, I had the privilege of co-designing a set of machined metal + cork coasters that celebrated both functionality and creative expression. Held at Andalusia Designs, the event brought together architects, designers, and creatives to connect, create, and celebrate design culture in Austin.
Our coaster design aimed to reflect the tactile, industrial elegance of architectural fabrication — combining precision-milled aluminum with a soft cork base for both utility and aesthetic. These coasters became not just functional keepsakes, but also a symbol of the merging of form and community.
Objectives
- Design a limited-run functional object that could be prototyped and produced in real-time for the WiA x LGBTQIA+ Alliance makers event.
- Showcase fabrication process and materiality in a way that resonates with Austin’s architecture and design culture.
- Create something collectible, personal, and symbolic of the connection between identity, form, and community.
- Contribute to a shared, hands-on experience at Andalusia Designs' workshop and showroom.
Solution & Implementation
1. Design Concept
We started with the idea of clean geometry and tactile contrast — blending brushed or bead-blasted aluminum with natural cork. The piece needed to feel weighty and intentional but approachable enough to serve as a networking object.
2. CAD + Machining
- Designed in Fusion 360, with an emphasis on symmetry, chamfered edges, and minimal waste.
- Used CNC machining on-site at Andalusia Designs, allowing attendees to observe and engage with the process.
- Cork pads were laser-cut and adhered post-machining to reduce vibration and moisture transfer.
3. Branding & Symbolism
- Minimal engraving on each piece — either initials, event hashtags, or architectural markings — offered a nod to custom drafting culture.
- The choice of materials reflected architecture’s balance between structure and comfort.
Results
- 50+ coasters fabricated and distributed live at the event
- Positive feedback from attendees including WiA leaders, AIA members, and LGBTQIA+ creatives
- Social reach amplified through event hashtags (#WiA #LGBTQIAAlliance #AndalusiaDesigns)
- Featured in WiA recap content, including a short video reel showcasing the build process and final designs
- Sparked new conversations around design identity, material exploration, and maker culture in Austin
About the Event
Last week was all about connection and creativity.
Hosted at Andalusia Designs, the event gave attendees an intimate, behind-the-scenes look into a live design workshop. From custom coasters to origami elephants, the hands-on atmosphere brought together architectural minds and creative souls.
